The Best Beaches from Busselton to Yallingup
There’s no denying that Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup boast some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Australia – and arguably the world. From calm and protected to wild and rugged; the endless stretches of white sand kissed by turquoise ocean invites us to indulge in swimming, snorkelling, surfing and SUP-ing.
Although we’re transitioning into Autumn, there are still plenty of warm days ahead to enjoy our beautiful coastline. And the best part? You’ll find a quieter slice of beachside heaven without the summer crowds.
- Busselton Jetty
Busselton’s iconic 155-year-old jetty stretches 1841 metres into the bay and is a must-see for visitors. Pick a warmer day when the southerly breeze has kicked in and spend the afternoon jumping in and out of the tidal swimming enclosure located on the west side of the jetty.
Hot tip – fascinated by the coral, sponges and sea critters that live around the timber piles? Try snorkelling off the access platform near the end, or take a guided tour of the Underwater Observatory.
- Geographe Bay
Spanning roughly from Busselton to the tip of Cape Naturaliste, Geographe Bay is an expansive stretch of turquoise water and soft white sand.
The best part? It’s located directly opposite Mandalay Resort!
There’s nothing so lovely as walking, swimming, fishing or relaxing with a good book along the calm, sandy shores. The gentle and temperate waters make it the perfect spot for beginner snorkellers too.
- Meelup Beach
Offering ideal swimming conditions, the protected bay of Meelup Beach has become a favourite for family holidays across generations. The pure white sand, the gentle rolling waves, and the crystal-clear water makes it a must-visit for anyone visiting the region.
There are toilet facilities, picnic tables and barbecues and sometimes an ice-cream van on site for those seeking a post-swim sweet treat.
Hot tip – visit late in the day and you might see the kangaroos come in to graze on the grass.
- Smiths Beach
Looking to go where the locals swim? Head down to Smiths Beach!
Here, you’ll find sheltered areas for family swimming, while further long the beach, there’s top-notch breaks for those chasing the chance to catch a few small barrels breaking on the sand. Yallingup Surf School often runs kids’ lessons here in summer. Pack a beach umbrella, grab a few snacks and spend the day relaxing in the sunshine.
- Bunker Bay
Quiet, isolated stretches of calm ocean with crystal white sand have a unique appeal – and that’s exactly what you’ll discover at Bunker Bay. This beach faces north, meaning it’s protected from the prevailing south-westerly winds.
There’s also a car park, showers and toilets, and the new ilma beach house offers brunch, lunch and beverages in stylish beachside surrounds.
- Yallingup Lagoon
Head down to Yallingup Beach, and directly in front of the adventure playground and staircase you’ll find Yallingup Lagoon – a tranquil swimming enclosure circled by reef. Perfect for youngsters learning to swim, or those craving a break from crashing waves.
Beyond the reef is the famed Yallingup surf break. North of the lagoon is Rabbits beach – beware the dumpers that break heavily on the sand. From Rabbits and further north, the beach is dog-friendly, and great for a brisk walk.
There’s also a playground, facilities and ample parking.
- The Aquarium
Set amongst the pristine Yallingup coastline, you’ll find the Aquarium – a small lagoon surrounded by granite outcrops. It’s the ideal spot for those seeking a sheltered snorkelling spot.
To get there, follow Canal Rocks Road until you find a small carpark, and to the right there’s a gravel lookout spot that has a small trail which leads to the Aquarium. The walk is about 1km and takes roughly 10 minutes. Alternatively you can park at Smiths Beach lookout and follow the Cape Track south, around 10-15 minutes’ walk.
There are no facilities, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection.
- Eagle Bay Beach
Nestled at the tip of Cape Naturaliste and home to the HMAS Swan dive wreck, Eagle Bay is a popular family friendly beach with safe swimming and plenty of rock pools to explore.
It’s also only a five-minute drive away from Eagle Bay Brewing Co and Wise Winery, both of which are lovely spots to park up for a post swim feed!
Follow the Eagle Bay-Meelup Road and you’ll see tiny beaches all waiting to be explored – Gannet Rock and Point Piquet to name a couple.
- Castle Rock
Protected from the westerly winds and ocean swell, Castle Rock is a slice of paradise prime for those who like to escape the crowds, and enjoy a quieter beach day swimming, paddle boarding and relaxing.
Nicknamed “Little Meelup” it’s lesser known than its more popular namesake, and locals often prefer it when the summer holidays are on.
The spot also has free gas BBQs, picnic tables and wheelchair access for those wanting to make a day of it.
